Chocolates by Grimaldi

April 21, 2015

Side Entrance Looking for a quick treat and activity for the kids? Chocolates by Grimaldi in Grand Haven is the place for you. They are a family own and operated chocolate factory that produces some very yummy treats. They have a glass wall to watch production of the candies, they also have factory tours and free samples to help you in your purchasing selection.

We took the kids in for a quick tour and tasting. It was long enough to keep the busy and short enough to keep the attention of the small ones. The tasting was great because the kids were then able to select the candies they liked, the chocolate covered potato chips are pretty awesome.

The tours are free for kids under 4, the rest its $3 a person.

They are located at 219 N 7th Street just west of US 31 in Grand Haven, MI. they are open 9-5 most days and till 6PM Tues-Fri. For more information on Chocolates by Grimaldi visit:

Valentines Day

February 6, 2015

2015 Valentines Day is quickly approaching and with it being on a Saturday expect a busy night at the restaurants, clubs, shows, concerts, etc. There are so many things going on in West Michigan on the Feb 14th, I am not going to list them all. However, here are a few suggestions.

Stay local, its still winter and who wants to be stuck in the snow or be in a fender bender on Valentines Day. Go to the local restaurant you don’t normally go to but like. For example, the Hearthstone in Muskegon is a great local restaurant my wife and I use to visit once a month or so but with kids not so often. Ouzo’s in Kalamazoo is having a jazz night or maybe dinner and drinks at Bullshead in Grand Rapids.

Want a weekend getaway? The Amway Grand and JW Marriott both have some great Valentine Day room packages with truffles, champagne in the room, and many other options.  Maybe a Bed and Breakfast is a better option like The Belvedere Inn in Saugatuck with five course candle lit dinner. The Bay Pointe Inn in Shelbyville has live music and dinner at the Terrace Grille.

Couple classes are also other popular choices, cooking classes in particular. Grand Rapids Down Town Market has Couples Cooking with Beer, Thought Design Learning Studio in Rockford has Love is In The Air (Italian Cooking Class), or the thePlate Boutique in Grand Rapids has a Valentine’s Day Breakfast In Bed Cooking Class.

Well have fun and have a Happy Valentines Day!

Memphis Smokehouse

October 3, 2014

Memphis Smokehouse

Walking around ArtPrize and Michigan Association of Realtor (MAR) Conference  and Expo at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids, MI I kept getting the smells of some good cooking on the grill. Today I think I found the source of this good smells, Memphis Smokehouse. Memphis Smokehouse is tucked in-between Bullshead and Mojo’s Piano Bar across from the Amway Grand on Monroe.

Its nots a large place but they have some comfy tables and benches, perfect for those not so nice weather days. Its close enough to Rosa Park Circle or the Grand River to enjoy your meal outdoors. The decor in the restaurant has a cozy vibe, grills as cashier counters and Blues playing on the radio.

The food smelled and looked pretty good.  They have some of the best comfort food you would find in Memphis from pulled pork, chicken wings, sweet potato fries, burgers, briskets, etc. I went with the Smokehouse Char Burger, described  as a juicy steak burger charbroiled to perfection, topped with applewood bacon and creamy block barrel cheese. the Burger and Fries were very tasty.

Very impressed with the service, cleanness, and quality of food. Check them out, you won’t be disappointed.

Art Prize 2014

September 29, 2014

Much is written about Art Prize, the walks, the votes, must see, etc. I am not a Art Critic so I find it difficult to tell you what you need to see. The few trips I have made this year I must say I enjoy it, I enjoy all of it. One thing I have notice Art Prize has a different vibe during the day vs a weekend day vs the night. Maybe its the number of people, maybe more of a party atmosphere at night, maybe more kids during the day, maybe people want to have a great, etc. not sure.  One thing is for sure you need to check out ArtPrize during the day and night! There are many pieces scattered around that need to be seen at night. So go for the day, get dinner, get a room, and enjoy it, all of it!!

Tall Ships In Muskegon

August 26, 2014
Nina and Pinta at Heritage Landing in downtown Muskegon

Nina and Pinta at Heritage Landing in downtown Muskegon

The Nina and the Pinta are at Heritage Landing in downtown Muskegon from August 27- September 1. The Nina is described as the most authentic replica of the Nina and the Pinta is slightly larger than the original. One thing is for sure the boats are a lot smaller than I expected and I find it hard to imagine crews crossing the ocean in these vessels.

Tour these museum ships to learn about life aboard a ship in the 15th century, about Columbus’ many voyages, the mechanics of the ship, life aboard today, and much more. Admission is $8.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors (age 60+), $6.00 for age s5-16 (not in a school group), age 4 and under are free! Group & School Tours require a minimum of 15 people and costs $5 per person. Hours are 9:00am to 6:00pm
